A garage door is the heaviest moving object in most homes. A double door weighs roughly 150 to 250 pounds, and almost all of that weight is held by a spring system under enormous tension. When one component fails, the load transfers somewhere it was never designed to go, which is why a small problem left alone tends to become an expensive one.
That is the practical argument for calling early. A worn roller costs a fraction of a bent track. A stretched cable costs a fraction of a door that has come off its rails and dented three panels on the way down.
Signs you need garage door repair

Springs are matched to your door's actual weight and travel, not approximated. Cables, rollers, hinges and bearings are replaced with parts rated for the door, and both springs are replaced together when one has broken.

The door is re-balanced so it holds position halfway, the opener's force and travel limits are reset, the auto-reverse safety is tested against an obstruction, and the old parts and packaging leave with the technician.

How long it takes
A single-fault repair โ one spring set, a cable pair, a roller replacement โ normally takes 60 to 90 minutes on site. Opener control-board or gear work runs closer to two hours. Repairs that need a part sourced from a supplier are quoted with a realistic return window rather than an optimistic one.
Safety warning
Never attempt torsion spring work yourself. A residential torsion spring stores enough energy to break bones and has caused fatalities. The winding bars, the cone set and the unwinding sequence are not improvisable with hand tools, and a spring that looks intact can still be holding full tension. The same applies to cables under load. Call a technician.
Why this comes up in Hamilton
Hamilton's housing stock spans a wide range, and the door on a 1920s Westdale semi behaves nothing like the one on a 2015 build in Binbrook. Older detached garages around Downtown Hamilton and the North End often have lighter single doors on extension springs, sometimes still with original hardware. Newer subdivisions on the Mountain, in Ancaster and around the Meadowlands are almost universally insulated steel doubles on torsion systems, which are heavier and less forgiving of a worn component.
The climate is the other constant. Southern Ontario freeze-thaw cycling puts springs through their hardest work in January and February, when steel is coldest and most brittle and homeowners cycle the door most often. Road salt tracked in over winter accelerates corrosion at the bottom brackets and the lower track, where meltwater sits.
