Where we cover in Hamilton
The escarpment splits Hamilton into two service realities. Above it, the Mountain runs from Upper James and Upper Wentworth out to Rymal Road and Stone Church, and it is dominated by post-war and modern subdivisions with attached garages. Below it, the lower city — the North End, Crown Point, Corktown, the Durand and Westdale — is older, denser, and full of detached garages reached from rear laneways.
Our office at 1051 Upper James St sits near the centre of that split, which keeps travel times reasonable in both directions. Coverage runs from Dundurn and Westdale in the west, through downtown and the industrial north end, out to Kenilworth, Parkdale and the Red Hill corridor in the east, and south across the whole Mountain to the Glanbrook boundary.

Hamilton housing and the doors that come with it
Hamilton's housing stock spans more than a century, and the door on the garage tells you roughly when the house was built. Century homes in the Durand, Kirkendall and Westdale usually have a single detached garage at the end of a narrow drive or off a rear lane, often with a lighter single door on extension springs and, in the oldest cases, original hardware that has been repaired rather than replaced.
Post-war housing through Crown Point, Homeside and the lower Mountain typically has a single-car attached or semi-attached garage with an 8x7 or 9x7 door. Newer Mountain subdivisions around Rymal, Upper Paradise and the Meadowlands fringe run insulated steel doubles on torsion systems — heavier, better sealed, and far less tolerant of a worn roller or an out-of-plumb track.
That range matters when parts are being sourced. A modern 16x7 insulated sectional and a 1950s single wood-frame door need entirely different spring sizes, track profiles and hardware, and the common variants for both are stocked.
What wears garage doors out in Hamilton
Hamilton's position on the lake and against the escarpment produces sharp temperature swings, and the freeze-thaw cycling that comes with them is what wears garage doors here. Steel springs are at their most brittle in deep cold, which is exactly when a door used as the family's main entrance is cycled most.
Salt is the second factor. Meltwater carrying road salt off vehicles pools at the base of the door, and the bottom bracket, the lowest section of track and the last few inches of cable sit in it for months. Corrosion at those points is the most common cause of cable failures across the city.
Lower-city detached garages add a third pattern: doors that go unused for days, then get asked to work at minus fifteen. Stiff lubricant, a seal frozen to the slab and an opener straining against both is a call we take repeatedly every January.
