The most common call is the simplest to fix: the door starts closing, then reverses and the opener light blinks. That is nearly always the safety sensors being misaligned or obstructed, not a failing motor.
Where a unit genuinely has failed, the honest question is repair or replace. A stripped drive gear on an otherwise healthy opener is worth repairing. A twenty-year-old chain drive with a dying board, no rolling-code security and no battery backup usually is not, and you will be told which of the two you have.

Separate opener faults from door faults
The technician disconnects the trolley and moves the door by hand first. A door that is heavy or binds by hand has a spring, cable or track problem โ and replacing the opener would not have fixed it. This one check prevents the most expensive misdiagnosis in the trade.

Test power, board and drive
Power supply, capacitor, logic board, motor windings and the drive gear or belt are checked in sequence, along with travel and force limit settings that drift out of adjustment over time.

Realign and verify safety sensors
Both photo-eyes are cleaned, realigned until the indicator LEDs are solid, and the wiring is checked for staple damage and corrosion. The auto-reverse is then tested against a solid obstruction, which is the legally required safety behaviour on every opener.

Repair or replace, then reprogram
Gears, sprockets, belts, trolleys, boards and sensors are replaced individually where the unit is worth keeping. If a new opener is the better value it is installed, all remotes and keypads are reprogrammed, and you are shown how to pair a new remote yourself.

Safety warning
Every opener sold in Canada since the early 1990s must reverse when the photo-eyes are broken or when the door meets resistance. Never disable, bypass or tape over the safety sensors to force a door to close โ that behaviour is the direct cause of entrapment injuries involving children and pets. If the door will not close because of the sensors, the sensors are doing their job and something needs correcting.
